Photos required! In the era of misguided cultural politics at the times of DDR, in the beginning of 1970’s, the "Chinese Pavilion" in the garden of Villa “Shatterhand.” was demolished. To achieve an authentic reconstruction we are trying to find original photos before the Pavilion was destroyed.
At the same time there is an effort to reconstruct the “Angel of the Well” that was part of the garden of the Villa “Shatterhand.” from 1920 to 1974 to its original version. The inspiration for this work of art created by Paul Peterich’s 1918/19 was the “Angel of the Well” from Karl May’s novel <Ardistan and Dschinnistan>. In March 1974 the statue was completely destroyed, after the right hand has been broken off earlier by a falling tree branch. Currently only the plinth is preserved. In order to achieve authentic reconstruction we are looking for photos from before the barbaric destruction of this work of art. Possible visitors to the Karl May Museum who might be in possession of some of these original photos please support our effort to enable these reconstructions by sending in or e-mailing these photos to us!
