This English Language Karl May Forum is a project of the Work and Research Association* Beobachter an der Elbe**, and jointly managed and moderated by Marlies Bugmann, Michael Michalak, Dr. William E. Thomas, and Ralf Harder.

*Original German title of association: Arbeits- und Forschungsgemeinschaft Beobachter an der Elbe, or AFG.
**Title of journal published by May early in his career, the most apt translation of which would be: ‘The Observer on the River Elbe’. This title has been revived and applied to the present periodical magazine published by the AFG.

The AFG was created on 20th May 2006. In close cooperation with the Karl May Foundation, the AFG attempts to find answers to open Karl May research questions, while taking into account ethnographic aspects. The main focus at the same time is the preparation and publication of printed matter that is connected by content to the collection, exhibition, and research activity of the Karl May Foundation.

The evaluation and annotation of Karl May’s library in ‘Villa Shatterhand’ are special priority tasks. Hans Grunert’s commendable essays in the AFG magazine Beobachter an der Elbe are but the tip of the iceberg; there is still much more to be done. While researchers at ‘Villa Shatterhand’ can simply avail themselves of the material on the book shelves, selective research conducted in Saxony’s archives proves extremely difficult. It is often a case of looking for a needle in a haystack—sometimes only coincidence brings something new to light. Much will remain undiscovered…
Where did Karl May’s drifting take him during the 1860s, after he had to leave his home town in a hurry? Did he publish anything in newspapers or journals? Perhaps one day the AFG will strike it lucky.

International publicity is also of great interest—this forum is a great example. The memory of the author Karl May and his works, the educational intent of which was directed towards promulgating tolerance, understanding among nations, and the love of peace, must be preserved and cared for.

In an endeavour to realise these goals, eighteen Karl May friends have joined forces. They are:
Peter Baanstra (Den Helder, The Netherlands)
    Ekkehard Bartsch (Bad Segeberg, Germany)
    Marlies Bugmann (Hobart, Australia)
    Ekkehard Fröde (Hohenstein-Ernstthal, Germany)
    Thomas Grafenberg (Berlin, Germany)
    Volker Griese (Wankendorf, Germany)
    Kerstin Harder (Hohenstein-Ernstthal, Germany)
    Ralf Harder (Hohenstein-Ernstthal, Germany)
    Dr. Eckehard Koch (Essen, Germany)
Dr. Jan Koten (Velke Mezirici, Czech Republic)
    Michael Michalak (Pierpont, USA)
    Harald Mischnick (Kronberg, Germany)
    Prof. Claus Roxin (Stockdorf, Germany)
    Wolfgang Sämmer (Würzburg, Germany)
Dr. William E. Thomas (Melbourne, Australia)
    René Wagner (Dresden, Germany)
    Frank Werder (Langen, Germany)
    Dr. Hermann Wohlgschaft (Günzburg, Germany)
There are two places that have been chosen for meetings: Villa Shatterhand in Radebeul, and the restaurant Klausmuehle in Hohenstein-Ernstthal. Visiting researchers and guests can take a stroll along May’s trails and, what’s most important, socialise with other Karl May researchers.

Ralf Harder
Head of the Work and Research Association
