A new French translation of Karl May's life will appear on the w-page of the Karl May Stiftung - after the German original, Dutch, and English translations, this time translated by Marie Versini, who everyone remembers as Nscho-Tschi - Winnetou's sister from the 1960' movies.

I presume that this will be a translation of Karl May’s autobiography, Mein Leben und Streben? I am delighted to see that Ms Versini maintains an interest in May. The list for my next order from Germany includes her memoir Ich war Winnetous Schwester (I was Winnetou’s Sister). By the way, she has a splendid web-site—

—which is well worth visiting. 8)

Hello Philip - Marie Versini translated into French the original German text written by Mr. Ralf Harder - to be seen on: <http://www.karl-may-stiftung.de/may.html> - followed by translations into English and Dutch. Her contribution in French is very valuable, and hopefully there will follow other translations into more languages. Karl May wrote an autobiography in 1910, published in German under the title Mein Leben und Streben and translated by Mr. Michael Michalak in 2007 as My Life and My Mission, published by: <http://www.nemsi-books.net/> Regards Bill.

Oh, you were referring to the excellent chronological biography to which I have often turned. (And thank you for that splendid translation, Bill!). Yes, a French version would be a wonderful addition to the web-site.

For English speaking readers:

Also note that Marlies Bugmann’s new English-language biography of Karl May will soon be available through Amazon.Com.

Actually,we, the Indonesian, already translated the biography (from Bill's english version) since 3 or 4 years ago, and being put on our site http://indokarlmay.com. Unfortunately, you can not check it at the moment as the site was under hacker attacks (even Indonesian Winnetou has the enemy, most probably sent or ordered by the Kiowa).

Aside to that, we, the Indonesian, also finished the autobiography translation since 2005, but again, unfortunately, can not publish it, and awaiting for at least after 20 Charley books (with original text) being on the market. At the moment we just only having 10 titles yet, although our data base having another 10 translated manuscripts.

For info, for unoriginal/abridged version, we have had 25 titles since 1950-1980s.

See, we, the Indonesian, are working hard to spread this Mayology among the Indonesian.

Hi Pandu

you write: >>>unfortunately, can not publish it, and awaiting for at least after 20 Charley books (with original text) being on the market. At the moment we just only having 10 titles yet, although our data base having another 10 translated manuscripts. <<<

What is the actual problem of not being able to publish the translations?

(PS - I think it is fantastic that Karl May has such a large 'fan base' in Indonesia!)

There are some reasons why we have to be strategically to publish the autobiography:

1. the books are published by the community, we have to assume that any book published must be sold out, otherwise we will loose and the our capital will be finished. The Winnetou I already printed for 6 times since 5 years ago (means 18.000 exp), for Indonesian standard that is very big achievement, but the name of Winnetou much more popular than the name of Karl May (believe it or not). To sell the name of Winnetou is easier than the name of Karl May. (Mind you: so many persons in Indonesia having name of Winnetou, but no body in Indonesia having name of Karl May :-) You can check it on the google).
2. although the name of Karl May slowly recovered (after being absent and forgotten for 20 years, 1980-2000) yet the books are not so much popular like in the 1960s. If the autobiography published to day, it will not having a big impact. So be patient, wait for other 10 books to published, make it hot first, and then: launch!

Hello Gono - It is with great pleasure to read that Karl May's books are being published in Indonesia! Would you be kind enough as to post here the titles of Karl May's books which appeared in print so far in Indonesian translation?

The following might be of interest to our friends in Indonesia: The latest issue of the Der Beobachter an der Elbe [The Observer on the River Elbe - one of the magazines Karl May edited] brings splendid photocopies of the series of ten original postcards sent by Karl May from his trip to what is today Indonesia:

http://www.beobachter-an-der-elbe.de/

All the ten original postcards from Ceylon (Sri Lanka) in Karl May's own handwriting with original post-stamps are nowadays deposited in the Archives of National Literature in Prague (Czech Republic). They represent an important contribution to the research into Karl May's life and work, and also of course to his link to Indonesia which he visited such a long time ago.

My greetings and regards to Karl May friends in Indonesia! Sincerely - Bill.
